W. L. Ryan, who has been one of the three operators at police headquarters since June 4, 1900, was born in the city of Delaware, Ohio, on January 16, 1866. He was educated in the public schools of that city and on leaving school became a telegraph operator. After several years of this work he removed to Dayton, where he again made his living with his fingers. He resigned his position with a railroad company to accept his present one. "Billy" is a most congenial fellow, and is popular with every member of the police department. He belongs to the Odd Fellows. He was united in marriage to Cora Viola Gross in early life, and they have two sons, Russell and Elwood.
